Larry Tracy
Profile
“An extraordinarily effective speaker” is how President Ronald Reagan
described Larry Tracy. He was an Army colonel assigned to the State Department
at the time, debating controversial foreign policy issues throughout the
country.
He is now cited as one of the top presentation skills trainers/coaches in the
country in publications such as the Information Please Business Almanac and
SourceBook and What to Say When You’re Dying on the Platform.
He brings real-world experience, not theory, to the field of presentation
skills training. He headed the Pentagon’s top briefing team, responsible for
daily intelligence presentations to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff,
the Secretary of Defense and other Defense Department officials.
Because of his reputation for exceptional presentation skills, the State
Department requested the Army to assign him to the Department. He subsequently
spoke and debated almost 400 times on controversial foreign policy issues before
some of the most demanding, even hostile, audiences in the country, leading to
the praise from President Reagan.
He is on the cover of the July 2005 issue of American Speaker Magazine, and
his speech “Taming Hostile Audiences” is described by the Editor, former chief
of speechwriting in the White House, as “an outstanding speech…teaching a number
of invaluable lessons in how to give a winning performance, even to the most
hostile of audiences.” The speech had originally been delivered in January 2005
to the Washington, D.C Chapter of the National Speakers Association, and was
subsequently published in the March 1, 2005 Vital Speeches of the Day, along
with speeches by President Bush and then-Fed Chairman Greenspan
His website
has been in the number one position on Google since September 2004 in response
to the search for “Persuasive Presentations.” Larry’s book, The Shortcut to
Persuasive Presentations, distills the techniques he teaches in his executive
workshops. He is writing a second book with the working title “BUY-IN: A
Presentation System to Win Over Bosses and Clients.”
He has appeared on numerous television programs, including Crossfire,
Nightline, and CNN World news, as well as Spanish-language news programs. A
graduate of St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, he holds an MA from
Georgetown University, and is a graduate of the U.S. Army Command and General
Staff College and the Inter-American Defense College.
He also conducts workshops in Spanish for Latin American executives who must
deliver their presentations in English, helping them learn in their native
language how to do so in the time-sensitive, "bottom line" style to which U.S.
clients are accustomed. He has lived in Argentina and Bolivia, and has traveled
widely in Latin America.

“In a Department that prides itself on its communication skills, you became
the standard to match in public oratory.”
Ambassador Otto Reich, US Department of State
"Larry Tracy is one of the most articulate advocates I've ever seen operate
on the platform. He's crisp and clear, his logic and thinking first-rate. As a
speech coach myself, I continue to learn from him."
John Jay Daly, Founder of the National Capital Speakers Association
"I have been trying cases for over thirty years, and have given a number of
legal papers. It was surprising to me how much your training contributed to my
presentation ability."
Carl G. Love, Partner, Cushman, Darby and Cushman
Attorneys at Law, Washington DC
"You not only trained twenty-two people how to speak convincingly in some
fairly hostile situations, but in two cases your training actually changed
personalities."
Steven Cox, Director, Officer of Intelligence and
Threat Analysis US Department of State |
Keynote and/or workshop topics
The following are topics, which Larry Tracy can deliver for keynote or other
conference presentations. No matter what the theme of the conference --medical,
financial, technical, etc.--Larry’s content-packed presentations contain advice
on communications, vital in all fields, which audience members can immediately
put into practice. He is also available for breakout sessions and one or two day
workshops.
- Getting “Buy-in:” The Objective of All Presentations: Most
presentation skills training focuses on delivery techniques, body language,
vocal inflection, etc. These are indeed important, but the objective for ALL
presentations is to gain willing and enthusiastic “Buy-in” of what the
presenter is “selling.” In this session, attendees learn a systematic method
to achieve such agreement from audience members/clients.
- Taming Hostile Audiences: Persuading Those Inclined More to Jeer than
Cheer: Unfortunately, the “real world” is filled with people who are
opposed to positions being taken by speakers. Such challenges can range from
unhappy shareholders at a corporate meeting to angry constituents at a
political gathering to frustrated parents at a PTA meeting. Do not despair.
In this session, Larry Tracy, who has faced many hostile audiences, will
demonstrate his tested way to win over such audiences.
- How “Fear of Speaking” Can Actually Make You a Better Speaker:
Speaking in front of a group consistently ranks as one of the top phobias in
the United States, and much of the literature and training on public
speaking carries the message that you must overcome this fear before you can
be an effective speaker. That is wrong—you should be a bit nervous, because
nervousness can generate enthusiasm when converted to positive energy. Larry
Tracy will show an easy–to-learn-and-implement method to use “stage fright”
to become a better speaker.
- Oral Presentations for Government Contracts: Since the
mid-1990’s, the Federal government, and many State governments, have revised
the procedure for awarding contracts. Previously, contracts were awarded
based on the merits of the written proposal. Now, however, many government
agencies require an oral presentation be made by the technical experts who
will actually carry out the terms of the contract. Program managers and
engineers must now become “sellers” as well as “doers” in what is often the
tie-breaker for winning a lucrative contract. In this session, attendees
learn a proven method to make winning “ orals”
